At the first session, Scott cleared out lots of dried winter foliage. Amy Martin strewed the ones with hollow stems in the unmowed areas in case pollinator eggs were inside. Sharon Holmes rescued several red yuccas and uncovered the bed edging. Francis Shaner, a very experienced (and now retired) landscaper did excellent work pruning back the possumhaw (the red-berried shrub) and dug up a bunch of mega-sized saplings encroaching on the bed.

Dallas Parks and Recreation delivered a large pile of mulch. Amy treated the early spring weeds with horticultural vinegar to make the mulch more effective. Scott is waiting for plants to emerge this spring, and then we’ll get to spreading it around. Definitely will need help for that.

Scott is leading a gentle re-design of the bed. Some of the large plants that tended to flop over on top of other plants will be transplanted to the greenbelt. A color flower bed will go in front of the stonework and some crepe myrtles for late-summer color off to the side.
