Eastwood Riparian triples size of greenbelt bluebonnet patch

Eastwood Riparian triples size of greenbelt bluebonnet patch

October 5, 2019 ENA

Members of Eastwood Riparian gathered to work on Saturday in the Dixon Branch Greenbelt. Their hot and sweaty efforts tripled the size of World Famous Eastwood Bluebonnet Patch. On hand were Van Jewell, Amy Martin, Michael Parkey, Francis Shaner, and Scooter Smith.

The seeds used were gathered from greenbelt plants earlier this year and ingeniously shelled by tossing the hard pods in a cement mixer with a large chain inside. Extra seeds were offered for sale to find riparian efforts or donated to nature nonprofits. Your annual Eastwood Neighborhood Association dues help fund Eastwood Riparian’s efforts.  Join us!

First, the areas for the two new patches were mowed. Then bluebonnet seeds were scattered.

A large pile of decomposed granite, bought with your donations, was delivered earlier. The team began shoveling granite on top of the seeds. Hard and heavy work! We sure did need more volunteers.
Wheelbarrows were used to make small piles.
The piles were carefully spread to about an inch thick later on top of the seeds.
The first new patch filled!
Then the decomposed grant spreading process was repeated in the second new patch.
The small remainder was dragged to the original bluebonnet patch.
Decomposed granite was spread to fill in the spots.
Furrows were made and filled with bluebonnet seed.
Finally, the furrows were filled, completing the task.

Pray for plentiful rain and hope for abundant blooms next year!
